The Coffee Farms of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala

Las Fincas de Cafe (The Coffee Farms)
A water-proof raincoat and a plastic pancho were
no match for the Guatemalan Rain Forest downpours which penetrated our protective gear. The coffee plants, from seed to producing, took 3 1/2 years to grow. And each one of the trees is able to produce several pounds of coffee each year. Harvesting is done nearly on a constant basis - when the coffee cherries are a deep, bright red, they need to be picked...and only by hand.

There is a major problem happening in the rain forest region - and many other coffee producing regions throughout Central America.
